Culture-based fisheries (CBF)

- The fish production management in Beledanga wetland is carried out by the local fishermen cooperative “Beledanga Barrackpore Fishermen Cooperative Society”.

- Culture based fisheries (CBF), which involve stocking and recapturing the stocked fish by utilizing the natural productivity is the most popular and reliable management practices for sustainable fish production in floodplain wetland.

- Due to its natural productivity, CBF is the most suitable option for sustainable enhancement of fish production in floodplain wetlands.

- Labeo rohita (rohu), Labeo catla (catla), Cirrhinus mrigala (mrigal), Cyprinus carpio (common carp), Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp) and Hypopthalmicthys molitrix (silver carp) were stocked in the wetland.

- Indian major carp (catla, rohu, mrigal) contributed the major fish catch in the wetland followed by grass carp, silver carp, common carp and small indigenous fishes (SIF).

- Stocking of fish had a positive impact on the fish production in the wetland.

- The average fish production during 2009-2021 was 43 tonnes per year.

- Since 2019, there has been a significant increase in grass carp production due to the intervention of ICAR-CIFRI through seed raising in pen and CBF demonstration.
